Kerala is famous for its beautiful landscapes and tranquil backwaters, which provides apt judgement to the phrase by which it is referred, ‘God’s own country’. The prominent society for science and education, National Geographic, in its popular Traveller magazine has also mentioned Kerala being one of the “ten paradises of the world”. But within this natural paradise, there is another paradise which makes it enviable among most other states of the country. Even though it has a lower per capita income, the state has achieved great improvements in material conditions of living which is comparable to those of many developed countries. This has led to the coinage of a new term to this style of development, the ‘Kerala Model’.
